How much does an autism assessment cost?
Written and reviewed by Dr Chris Smith · Last reviewed 22 September 2026
On the NHS, an autism assessment is free — the cost is the wait. Privately, you pay, and prices differ widely between clinics. The figures below are live: they come from the prices the providers listed on NeuroCompare publish for autism assessment, and they update as those prices change. No estimates, no averages borrowed from elsewhere.
Adult autism assessment
Not published
No provider currently publishes an adult autism price
Child autism assessment
Not published
No provider currently publishes a child autism price
Figures are the providers' own published autism prices, taken from the same directory that drives the comparison. Where a provider publishes no autism price we show "Not published" rather than substituting a figure from elsewhere — and we never show an ADHD price on an autism page.
Why the range is so wide
- How many clinicians. NICE describes autism assessment as drawing on more than one professional's view where needed. A multidisciplinary assessment costs more than a single-clinician appointment.
- How long it takes. Some assessments run across several hours or more than one session, including a developmental history and an informant interview.
- The report. A detailed written report that can be used for workplace or education adjustments takes time to produce, and some clinics price it separately.
- Children versus adults. Child assessments often involve school information and observation, so they tend to sit at the higher end.
- Online versus in person. Online assessments are often cheaper and quicker to book; in-person can suit children or anyone who finds video calls hard.
Questions worth asking before you pay
- Is the written report included in the fee?
- Is there a follow-up appointment to go through the outcome, and is it included?
- Who carries out the assessment, and what is their profession?
- Do you assess for co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, and is that extra?
- What is your current wait, and what is your refund policy?

The free routes
Your local NHS autism service costs nothing, and in England the Right to Choose route can apply to autism assessments — check the provider holds an autism Right to Choose contract before your GP sends anything. Our autism Right to Choose guide sets out the steps, and our autism waiting times page shows what you may be trading for the saving.
What you are not paying for
Autism is not an illness, and no assessment leads to a cure — there is nothing to cure. What a diagnosis buys is understanding, access to adjustments, and clarity about any co-occurring condition that does need treating. Be wary of any service selling a "treatment" for autism itself: NICE CG170 advises against secretin, chelation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy in any context; against neurofeedback and auditory integration training for speech and language; and against antipsychotics, antidepressants or exclusion diets for the core features of autism.
Common questions
- Is an autism assessment free on the NHS?
- Yes. An NHS autism assessment costs you nothing, whether through your local service or, in England, through the Right to Choose route with a provider that holds an autism contract. Waits are usually much longer than paying privately.
- Why do private prices vary so much?
- Because what is being bought varies. A single clinician appointment costs less than a multidisciplinary assessment with two professionals, structured interviews, school or informant reports and a full written report.
- What should the fee include?
- Ask before you pay: the pre-assessment paperwork, the appointment itself, any informant interview, the written diagnostic report, and whether a follow-up to discuss the outcome is included or charged separately.
- Do I have to pay again if the assessment finds I'm not autistic?
- No — you are paying for the assessment, not for a particular outcome. A good report will also say what else may explain your experiences.
- Are there ongoing costs after an autism diagnosis?
- Usually not in the way there can be with ADHD, because autism is not treated with medication. Costs, if any, tend to be for optional support such as post-diagnostic sessions, therapy for a co-occurring condition, or workplace assessments.
